As exhaust pulses exit each cylinder bank in bursts, midpipes play a critical role in smoothing, balancing, and optimizing that flow. By managing how these pulses merge and travel downstream, they help improve exhaust scavenging, reduce turbulence, and maintain proper velocity. This not only contributes to better overall engine efficiency and potential horsepower gains, but also has a major impact on the sound of the vehicle, whether it’s a deeper tone, reduced rasp, or a more aggressive note, depending on the design (such as X-pipe or H-pipe configurations).

Types of Midpipes

There are two main types of mid pipes:

X-Pipe merges both exhaust streams into an “X” and can improve high-RPM horsepower. It can provide a smoother, higher-pitched exotic tone.

H-Pipe connects pipes with a small balance tube that can improve low-end torque feel and result in a deeper, classic muscle-car sound.
