Ultimate Guide to the Best Mods for the Dodge RAM TRX

The Dodge RAM 1500 TRX is already a beast from the factory, with a supercharged 6.2L HEMI pushing 702 horsepower (that’s flywheel numbers, not to the wheels). Still, for enthusiasts who live to chase more power and sharper throttle response, the right mods can transform this truck into a true performance monster.

The factory calibration is conservative. The airflow system has room to grow. The fuel system can be optimized. The Supercharger pulley can be changed to increase boost. The list goes on here.

Cold Air Intakes: Improving Airflow Into the Supercharger

Airflow is the foundation of horsepower. The TRX’s factory intake system is decent, but it’s still designed around noise reduction and mass production constraints.

An upgraded cold air intake reduces intake restriction and improves the volume of clean, dense air entering the supercharger. On a stock truck, gains are modest. However, once you begin increasing boost and recalibrating the ECU, improved airflow becomes more important.

A high-quality intake system like the S&B TRX Intake can:

  • Improve throttle response
  • Support higher boost levels
  • Enhance the supercharger sound

While an intake alone won’t transform the truck, it becomes a critical supporting mod once pulley and tuning upgrades are introduced. Airflow improvements compound when combined with boost increases.

Exhaust Upgrades: Cat-Back Systems and Long Tube Headers

The TRX moves a massive amount of air. Once you increase boost and fueling, exhaust flow becomes even more important.

Cat-Back Exhaust Systems

A cat-back exhaust primarily improves flow after the catalytic converters. On the TRX, the biggest benefits are:

  • Deeper, more aggressive tone
  • Slight reduction in backpressure
  • Minor horsepower gains

For many owners, sound is a major factor. The 6.2L supercharged HEMI responds extremely well to a properly tuned exhaust note, delivering a more aggressive character without excessive drone. Here at Dusterhoff Racing, we love and highly recommend any Corsa Catback System. Take your pick between Xtreme and Sport; it’s mainly a matter of personal preference regarding sound profile. Long Tube Headers

Long tube headers are where performance gains become meaningful. By improving exhaust scavenging and reducing restriction at the cylinder head, long tubes increase airflow efficiency across the entire RPM range.

When paired with tuning, long tube headers can:

  • Increase mid-range torque
  • Louder exhaust volume
  • Improve high-RPM horsepower
  • Complement pulley and ethanol setups

If you’re going to upgrade your camshaft, we always recommend running a set of longtubes paired with your favorite catback exhaust.

Supercharger Efficiency: Pulley Upgrades and Boost Increases

The factory 2.4L supercharger on the TRX is extremely capable. One of the most effective ways to unlock power is by increasing blower speed through a smaller upper pulley.

A pulley upgrade increases boost pressure by spinning the supercharger faster. More boost means more air entering the engine, which, when matched with proper fueling and tuning, produces significant horsepower and torque gains.

However, boost alone does not equal power. Efficiency matters. Supporting modifications such as upgraded belts, optimized intake airflow, and proper ECU calibration ensure that additional boost translates into usable performance rather than excess heat. This is one of the most impactful TRX modifications available.

Fueling Upgrades: Injectors and Upgraded Fuel Systems

As the boost increases, fuel demand rises rapidly. The factory fuel system can support mild upgrades, but serious performance builds require more capacity.

Upgraded fuel injectors are essential for maintaining safe air-fuel ratios, supporting ethanol blends or E85, and preventing lean conditions under boost.

For more aggressive setups, upgraded fuel pumps may be required. Proper fueling upgrades ensure consistent combustion, reliable power delivery, and safe cylinder pressures at higher boost levels.

Fueling is not a flashy modification, but it is one of the most important components of a properly built TRX.

Aftermarket Wheels and Tires: Reducing Rotational Mass & Increasing All-Terrain Traction

The TRX checks a lot of the versatility boxes. Not only can it be fast, but it can also serve as a fully functional off-road vehicle. That being said, most TRX owners are probably not so worried about how it hooks on the pavement but just ensuring all-around terrain performance improvements.

The TRX weighs roughly 6,400lbs so anywhere we can shed some weight while also improving performance and/or appearance is a win! Aftermarket wheels can reduce rotational mass compared to heavier factory options. Lower rotational mass can improve acceleration, braking response, steering feel, and overall shedding weight can improve MPG.

Because rotating weight has a multiplied effect compared to static weight, even modest reductions can improve how quickly the truck feels off the line.

Tire selection is equally important. Depending on your use case, most TRX owners will probably be focused on either a good all-terrain tire. Some owners will opt for aggresive offroad tires, and for those just wanting a race/pavement queen, then a performance street/strip tire will be the move.

The TRX was designed to be versatile. Matching tire selection to your actual driving goals ensures your horsepower gains are fully usable.

Power Packages: The easiest way to build a TRX

While individual modifications can produce results, the most effective approach is an engineered system. Rather than guessing which parts work together, a properly designed package eliminates the trial and error.

TRX power packages combine pulley upgrades, fueling components, PCM unlocking, and custom engine and transmission calibration into a cohesive solution. When parts are designed to work together, the results are smoother, stronger, and more reliable than mixing random components.

Here at Dusterhoff Racing, we put in extensive time and testing into our power packages, so you don’t have to stress. We offer four different TRX power packages:

DT797 Power Package – (Pump Gas, good for roughly 50whp over stock)

DT877 Power Package – (Max Effort Pump Gas, good for roughly 100whp over stock)

DT937 Power Package – (Flex-Fuel setup, good for roughly 100-140whp over stock)

DT997E Power Package – (E85 Only, good for roughly 200whp over stock)

Instead of chasing peak dyno numbers alone, the focus is on balanced power delivery, optimized drivability, and real-world performance.
